The Mary J. Blige and Nas Royalty Tour is a banger. Akin to visiting a close friend you haven’t seen in a while and reminiscing on how your bond never disconnected.
Mary J and Nas are a magic duo that will have you jamming days after the concert ends. Seeing either of these artists alone is a gift. Them performing on one stage is a movie of epic proportions blessed by a few images of Diddy introducing the queen of R&B. Do people even still say “a movie”? Even if they don’t, the Mary J Blige and Nas Royalty Tour deserves the coined terminology.
The Mary J Blige and Nas Royalty Tour setlist takes listeners back to a time of portable CD players
Reaching back into a setlist that combines Share My World, If I ruled the World, Love No Limit, Street Dreams, Mr. Wrong, The World is Yours, I’m Goin Down, Hate Me Now, and I Can Love You is nothing short of playing with a hot and bubbly fire that causes body rocking and revives the soul.
The Nas and Mary J. Blige concert opened in West Palm Beach, FL at the Coral Sky Amphitheater. So happy to be the first!!
Coral Sky Amphitheater
The amphitheater is an open-air stadium, i.e. outdoors, therefore it can be hot or rainy or hot and rainy. Fortunately, on this night concert attendees weren’t splashed with the rain but instead, smacked by the heat.
Florida heat in July isn’t selfish. It allows Hades to knock on everyone’s cheeks! You get heat, you get heat, everybody gets heat!!
Coral Sky Amphitheater has two sections. The large laid- back lawn area allows viewers to see performers on a large screen. People can bring lawn chairs. The lawn area capacity is 12,000 and the seated area is 8,000. Underneath a large covered area is where the actual performance happens. There are eight seated sections. The view from all the seats of Coral Sky Amphitheater is good because it is not a large stadium. South Florida weather is temperamental and the covered area allows additional protection from sun and rain. Amphitheater events are rain or shine.
Coral Sky Amphitheater is large enough to feel like you’re at a concert but intimate enough to see the performers and most of the crowd. We arrived late and were lucky to park in the smaller parking lot which equated to a quicker exit.
A lot of people arrived on Miami time, CP time, Latin time, POC time, Caribbean time, American South time and everything in between that equates to habitual lateness to entertainment venues. Parking is free.
Is there an opening act for Mary J Blige and Nas Royalty tour?
Nas and Mary J. Blige Royalty Tour went straight to the point with no opening act. Mary J and Nas, draped in gold hues, opened the concert together. Next was Nas’ solo performance. Ther is no doubt that they are thriving.
What to wear to the Mary J Blige and Nas concert?
If you are outside in the summer, keep it cute but heat friendly. I went with black on black and a pair of thigh-high flat boots. This is a stand-up all-night type of event. At least for an eighties urban baby it was. My girlfriend and I danced and sung our hearts out. Heels would hinder our magnificent two-step.
Couples or girl’s night event?
The Royalty tour featuring Mary J. Blige and Nas can be a couples or girl’s night out event. There were many couples throughout the venue and a lot of all female or all-male groups. We kept it down to a girl’s duo. It was a lot of fun because we are two girls with northeastern origins that grew up in the Nas and Mary era. We knew every song and dance. It truly was a blast.
Nas
An ageless wonder, Nas continues to emanate a gritty schoolboy charm. He rocked the house wearing a mustard-colored suit, white sneakers and a white t-shirt under. A very flattering look but, he underestimated the Florida heat because by the end of the set the suit was sweated out! He asked for the nonexistent air conditioning at one point. Large fans circulate in the Coral Sky amphitheater to assist with heat, but they do not replicate central air.
Nas had Al Capone and New York architecture in the background. His minimalist decor focused on the best thing he has to offer, his lyrics. He bopped and danced across the stage maintaining positive energy which engaged and invigorated the crowd. His anthems had members of the crowd singing along word for word. Some of the hits he performed included, The World is Yours, One Mic, You Owe Me, It Ain’t Hard to Tell, N.Y. State of mind, One Love, If I ruled the world, Hate Me Now, and one of my favorites Oochie Wally.
Duo’s
During the Mary J. and Nas concert, they performed several songs together including Love is all we need. Nas’ second suit was a black satin short set, Hugh Hefner vibes.
Mary J. Blige
She was the second act to enter the stage. Diddy’s image gracefully shouted the queen’s entry as only he can. Mary J Blige looked like a golden goddess doused with South Florida heats radiance. She sang hit after hit. Her backup singers are amazing. Only goosebumps can describe the beauty of their vocal instruments. Her background dancers did the running man and wop along with some newer moves.
Mary’s music and empowering words of wisdom enhanced the Mary J. Blige and Nas Royalty Tour. She stressed remaining true to your light and looking for a partner when in a partnership. Her setlist includes: Real Love, Mr. Wrong, You Remind Me, Share My World, Be Without You, No More Drama, I Can Love You, Not Gon’ Cry, Mighty River, Sweet Thing, I Don’t Want to Do Anything and so many more.
Denim was a major part of Mary J. Blige’s effortless wardrobe theme. Lots of cut off shorts and ripped denim. Her outfit changes constituted of a gorgeous ripped denim jacket with ripped denim shorts, a beautiful blue, and gold cowboy hat, thigh-high boots, beautiful blue blinged-out bra with a golden kimono and denim shorts and a gold sequin romper.
Ms. Blige is timeless and on the top of her game.
